Women in Media Initiatives Somalia (WIMISOM) organized Training of Basic Journalism for Early Career Female Journalists in Garowe. The two-day training which started on May 29, 2021 and ended on May 30, 2021 was participated by 15 female journalists and graduates of Journalism schools based in Puntland.
The objective of this training was to impart in the participants knowledge and skills on how to effectively carry out their work, including elements of effective journalism, basic and more advanced reporting, conducting investigations, and principles of good journalism conduct.
In her opening remarks, Nasra Abdirisak, the executive director of WIMISOM has emphasized the significance of this training for early career journalists joining the profession. She has pointed out the reality of many becoming journalists with no basic or advanced training in journalism and the effect of that on the productivity and impact of journalists. She stated the need for enhancing the capacity of journalists through continuous learning and the need for upholding the conducts and principle of good journalism.
During the session of the two-day training, the participants were taught many topics including basics of journalism, principles of good journalism, news and program production, reporting from the field, and journalism ethics. The participants through the training were given ample opportunities to reflect on the topics and lessons and to share expectations and experience and ways they can incorporate what they have learned to their work.
The trainees have shown interest and eagerness to learn and to put into practice what they have learned. They have expressed their need for such learning opportunities in order to deepen their understating of the profession and to improve their skills set.
This training is part of the Enhancing the Capacity of Female Journalists Project implemented by WIMISOM with support from National Endowment for Democracy. WIMISOM stands for increasing the output and productivity of Somali women in media and empowering them to enable them to effect positive change in the lives of Somali women.
